Premier Wynne Attends Khalsa Day Parade

Premier Kathleen Wynne attended the Khalsa Day parade in Malton today to celebrate the Sikh community’s contributions to Ontario’s diversity. She also spoke to the community about her plan to build opportunity and economic security.

A few weeks ago, Ontarians were reminded of why we can’t take for granted that all people in our province will be treated with dignity and respect. In Brampton, hateful flyers were distributed that insulted the contributions of the Sikh community. It was a sad reminder that there are still those who will try to use our differences to divide us.

Premier Wynne and her Liberals moved quickly, not just condemning the flyers, but leading the Legislature to pass a motion condemning the flyers and supporting the Sikh community.. This response reinforced Premier Wynne’s belief that no matter what your symbol, faith, style of dress, gender or ability, all Ontarians deserve to be treated with respect.

This clear commitment to respect will be an important factor in the upcoming provincial election when the Ontario people will have a clear choice between the Liberal’s balanced approach that will create jobs and nurture our economic recovery and the opposition parties, who would put that recovery in jeopardy with reckless schemes and irresponsible choices.

On Thursday, Premier Wynne’s Liberals introduced a budget that lays out a plan for a strong Ontario, with more jobs, more opportunity and a more secure future. It will build opportunities for today and tomorrow.

Only Ontario Liberals have:

  • A real plan to help create more good, well-paying jobs in Ontario – and to help young people find that all-important first job.
  • An achievable plan to invest in infrastructure and transit so our province becomes an even better place to live, work and raise a family, and
  • A necessary plan to help Ontarians save for their golden years through an Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP).

Specifically, Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals will invest in jobs by establishing a new 10-year, $2.5 billion Jobs and Prosperity Fund that will help Ontario attract business investments, strengthen Ontario’s strategic sectors and support the province’s future economic growth.

Ontario Liberals will tackle the province’s growing transportation and infrastructure needs with a 10-year plan that would invest $130 billion, including a dedicated $29 billion for transportation . This will include $15 billion for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and nearly $14 billion for outside the GTHA.

Premier Wynne and her Liberal team knows that Ontarians deserve a stable quality of life and standard of living when they retire, after a lifetime of work and contribution to Ontario’s economy. While the federal government has been wilfully negligent on this issue and refuses to address the inadequate Canadian Pension Plan, Ontario Liberals are taking the lead to support Ontarians in their retirement. The ORPP would build on the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and initially cover more than three million working Ontarians. It could roughly double the retirement benefit received under the CPP alone.

  • This April was the first officially recognized as Sikh Heritage Month in Ontario.
  • The realistic, practical Ontario Liberal plan includes more than $11 billion for elementary and secondary education infrastructure and $11.4 billion in major hospital expansion and redevelopment projects
  • Ontario Liberals would also invest $295 million over two years for the highly successful Ontario Youth Jobs Strategy, which gives young people the opportunity to gain a foothold in the job market. The strategy has already helped over 10,000 young people get work experience and find job.
