AURORA—Local lawyer and community advocate Naheed Yaqubian was nominated today as the Ontario Liberal Party candidate in Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill.

Yaqubian accepted the nomination at a packed event at the Aurora Cultural Centre, saying, “I am humbled and honoured to accept the Ontario Liberal Party nomination for Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill. Growing up in Richmond Hill as the daughter of immigrants, I was lucky to have benefited from a public education system that provided me with a world-class education—from kindergarten to law school. Now, more than ever, I want to give back to the community that has given so much to my family.”

“I'm ready to be a bold, fresh voice on the Ontario Liberal team; I’m ready to defend our communities’ right to a brighter and more prosperous future,” Yaqubian added.

The Hon. Dr. Helena Jaczek, the MPP for Oak Ridges—Markham, whose current riding encompasses much of the new Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill riding, added her support for Yaqubian, saying, “I've known Naheed for a number of years and I’m proud to endorse her as our Ontario Liberal Party candidate. Naheed is a lawyer whose progressive views led her to sit on the Board of Refugee SSP Toronto, a nationwide organization of lawyers who provide pro bono services to Canadians seeking to welcome refugees to Canada. She believes strongly in collective action for the public good and I know she can be counted on to represent her constituents extremely well.”

Yaqubian is a member of the Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce and of the Business Women’s Network of York Region. She also provides volunteer legal services to a non-profit, low-income housing corporation in Richmond Hill. Recently, Yaqubian also stepped up to help improve the York Region District School Board as chair of the Equity and Inclusivity Advisory Committee. This committee is responsible for promoting diversity and inclusion within our schools—the same schools Yaqubian once attended.

She graduated from McMaster University and earned her law degree at Queen’s University, where she was student-body president and earned the Tricolour Award, the highest award for distinguished service to the University. Yaqubian lives in Richmond Hill.

Under the leadership of Premier Kathleen Wynne, the Ontario Liberal Party has a plan to deliver opportunity and fairness for everyone. While Ontario has a balanced budget and growing economy, not everyone is feeling that growth yet. That’s why we are working to deliver a fairer, better Ontario through free tuition for 210,000 students, free prescription drug coverage for children and youth, 100,000 affordable child-care spaces, and record-breaking investments in public transit across the GTHA.
